Expert Tax Relief in Sweden: keep 25% of your income tax-free
Summary
Moving to Sweden for work? Up to 25% of your income can be tax-free for up to seven years through Sweden's expert tax relief. You qualify automatically if you earn at least SEK 88,801 per month (2026), or through an expertise assessment below that. The catch: you must apply to Forskarskattenämnden within three months of your first working day, or the relief is lost for good. The article explains both routes, the conditions, and how Maandag Nordic handles this as part of relocation support for international consultants.
Did you know that when you move to Sweden for work, up to 25% of your income can be tax-free for up to seven years? It is called expert tax relief (expertskatt), and it is far less known than it should be. Many international professionals only learn about it months into their first job in Sweden, often too late, because the deadline to apply is strict: three months from your first working day. At Maandag® Nordic, we work with international engineers and IT specialists relocating to Sweden, and this is one of the first things we walk new consultants through. Here is how it works. What is expert tax relief? Expert tax relief is a Swedish tax incentive for attracting international specialists, researchers and key personnel. If you qualify, 25% of your employment income is exempt from Swedish income tax, and your employer pays social security contributions on only 75% of your salary. For anyone arriving now, the relief applies for up to seven years and covers your full taxable compensation: base salary, bonuses and benefits in kind. Who qualifies? There are two routes, and the first is simpler than most people expect. 1. The salary route. If your monthly pay is SEK 88,801 or more, you qualify automatically, with no review of your expertise. The 2026 threshold equals 1.5 times the price base amount (prisbasbeloppet, SEK 59,200 in 2026) and is adjusted yearly. Your salary must stay above it throughout the period, worth knowing if part of your pay is a variable bonus. 2. The expertise route. Below the threshold, you can still qualify if your role requires expertise that is difficult to find in Sweden, as an expert, researcher or key person. Assessed case by case. Baseline conditions for both routes: • You are not a Swedish citizen. • You have not lived in Sweden during the five calendar years before the year you start working. • Your employer is Swedish, or a foreign company with a permanent establishment in Sweden. The relief is not limited to standard employment. If you draw a formal salary from your own aktiebolag, you can qualify on the same terms. Self-employment through an enskild firma does not qualify, as there is no employer relationship. The detail most people miss: the three-month deadline You have three months from your first working day in Sweden to apply. Miss the window and the relief is gone, with no retroactive claim and no exceptions. On a specialist salary, that can mean losing several hundred thousand kronor. Treat the application as a first-week task, alongside your personnummer and bank setup. How to apply The application does not go to Skatteverket. It goes to the Taxation of Research Workers Board (Forskarskattenamnden), in writing, for a specific employee and employer. You or your employer can submit it, often it is done jointly. The deadline is on the plan before day one, so nobody discovers the relief in month five. Considering a move to Sweden? Our Living and Working in Sweden page collects everything else you will want to know. Moving to Sweden for work? You could get 25% of your income tax-free
Sweden's expert tax relief (expertskatt) lets qualifying international professionals exclude 25% of their employment income from Swedish tax for up to seven years. It's one of the most valuable, and most overlooked, benefits available to relocating specialists. Many only hear about it months into their first job in Sweden, by which point it's too late: the application deadline is a strict three months from your first working day.
At Maandag® Nordic, we work with international engineers and IT specialists relocating to Sweden, and this is one of the first things we walk new consultants through.
What is expert tax relief?
It's a Swedish tax incentive designed to attract international specialists, researchers, and key personnel. If you qualify, 25% of your employment income is exempt from Swedish income tax, and your employer only pays social security contributions on the remaining 75%. For anyone arriving now, the relief runs for up to seven years and covers your full taxable compensation, including base salary, bonuses, and benefits in kind.
Who qualifies?
There are two routes in, and the first is simpler than most people expect.
1. The salary route. If your monthly pay is SEK 88,801 or more, you qualify automatically, with no review of your expertise required. That threshold equals 1.5 times the 2026 price base amount (prisbasbeloppet, SEK 59,200) and is adjusted each year. Your salary needs to stay above it for the whole period, which is worth keeping in mind if part of your pay is a variable bonus.
2. The expertise route. Below the salary threshold, you can still qualify if your role calls for expertise that's hard to find in Sweden, as an expert, researcher, or key person. This is assessed case by case.
Baseline conditions apply to both routes:
You are not a Swedish citizen
You have not lived in Sweden during the five calendar years before the year you start working
Your employer is Swedish, or a foreign company with a permanent establishment in Sweden
The relief isn't limited to standard employment either. If you draw a formal salary from your own aktiebolag, you can qualify on the same terms. Self-employment through an enskild firma doesn't qualify, since there's no employer relationship.
The detail most people miss: the three-month deadline
You have three months from your first working day in Sweden to apply. Miss that window and the relief is gone, with no retroactive claim and no exceptions. On a specialist salary, that can mean losing several hundred thousand kronor. Treat the application as a first-week task, right alongside your personnummer and bank setup.
How to apply
The application doesn't go to Skatteverket. It goes to the Taxation of Research Workers Board (Forskarskattenämnden), in writing, for a specific employee and employer. Either you or your employer can submit it, and it's often done jointly.
